Salmon Fishing

Salmon fishing is a long-standing Newfoundland tradition, and Lumsden is home to three salmon rivers — two Class 4 and one Class 2. A valid salmon licence is required and is typically available at the local service station.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) regulations allow catch-and-release of up to three salmon per day, with retention limits depending on river classification.

The salmon season runs from July 1 to September 7. Please note that temporary closures may occur, so always confirm current regulations before fishing.

For the most up-to-date regulations and licensing details, visit the Newfoundland and Labrador Anglers’ Guide (DFO) .

Recreational Cod Fishing

Cod fishing remains an iconic Newfoundland experience and is open to both residents and visitors with no licence required. The recreational food fishery runs:

  • Fall Season: Last weekend of September to first weekend of October

Fishing is permitted from 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset. Limits include 5 groundfish per person and a 15-fish boat limit when 3 or more people are on board.
